UNMUTUAL - UNKONFORM
"Wie aber übersetzt man das negativ eines neologismus, wenn
es nicht einmal ein richtiges äquivalent für das positiv
gibt?"

UNMUTUAL
"But how do you translate the negative expression of a neologism when there isn't even a real equivalent to the positive one?"
This question was raised in 2010 when Franco-German TV station ARTE commissioned the dubbing of the four previously non-German episodes of THE PRISONER: "Free For All", "The Schizoid Man", "A Change Of Mind" and "Living In Harmony" thus completing and broadcasting it. "Unmutual" is the central expression in the episode "A Change Of Mind" ("Sinneswandel").
"Unmutual", according to the Urban Dictionary, was coined by and for the series THE PRISONER. However, the Oxford Living Dictionaries tell us that the first appearance of the word was in the late 16th century. Anyhow, it can be stated that the adjective has been widely in use ever since THE PRISONER, thus in most recent times. It is the negative expression of the word "mutual" that's been used in the English language since the 15th century- the meaning of which being "reciprocal", "unanimously by both parties".
For the German translation an appropriate word had to be found. The solution for the ARTE transmission was eventually: "unkonform" - which is "not conforming", one who "doesn't play the game". And as mostly, the target of this stigmatising term of course is Number Six himself.
