HERCULES HALL - TOWN HALL
stadtrat.
HERCULES HALL - TOWN HALL
To Sir Clough Williams-Ellis Hercules Hall or Town Hall, erected in 1937/38, was "the town hall without a town." It is situated only a few metres away from the statue of Hercules carrying the
world globe on his shoulders which in fact is what Atlas was doing. The town hall of THE PRISONER is the place where the Council Chamber meets. The central part of this building is from the 17th century Emral Hall of Flintshire. While making plans for a ballroom Williams-Ellis heard about its pending demolition. The hall ceiling is a barrel wault decorated all over with plaster stucco depicting the doings of mythological Hercules. Sir Clough had already intended to acquire the work in order to reerect and include it in Portmeirion. He managed to buy the ceiling at an auction for a mere 13 Pounds. But then he faced the problem of having to purchase and
dismantle the surrounding room as well for a multiple of the ceiling price. The crown structure on the central tower is on top of a copper cauldron put upside-down formerly used as a pig boiler.
Going down the way from the Pantheon (more...) an impressiv wrought iron gate of 1908 stands in front of the building. It's interesting: The apparent main entrance beside a staircase leading to the first floor reveals little more than a public toilet.
